While we were on holiday my son accidentally locked my HTC Magic phone (aka G2) by getting the unlocking pattern on the touch screen wrong too many times.
It then asks for your google account credentials. No problem I thought, but it would not accept them. I thought maybe it just because I was roaming and did not have full data facilities, however even once home it simply would not accept my google account details even though I could now double check them on another machine.
Took me a while to find the factory reset option so thought I would blog it here.
- Turn phone off
- Hold home key and press power on key - after a short wait (quicker than normal startup) you will see a screen with a Warning triangle and a phone picture
- Press Home key and Power on key together- you will see three options
- reboot
- apply sdcard:update.zip
- factory reset
- Select with track ball and click as required
Hope that helps someone.

Oct 18, 2009 at 8:15 AM Unlocked mine without doing all that!!!!
1-If your android is off...don't bother to enter email and password...
How to open android...call yourself, your phone can still receive calls...as soon as phone rings, you have a quater of a second to press on your android button on the menu(if you see it or have put it there like mine was).
2- if that dosen't work, call yourself, answer and get to the menu by pressing on the home button right after pressing on the menu button(wich will open a settings window for your call) two things might happen(tried it a couple of times and got 2 results by error)
-1- you can acces your menu and:activate internet or try to play with the security settings
-2- you wil be promped to the pattern screen and have unlimited pattern access(after 5 unsuccesive attempts you'll need to wait 30sec.).
Hope this will work for you. I unlocked mine by opening APNdroid(to access internet/activate 3G) and after that, promped my complete gmail adress(*****@gmail.com) and my password (i made sure on my pc that i can open my gmail account with what i am entering as username and password). My phone asked me to create a new pattern, did that and after confirming it,my phone was unlocked. I've been tring lots of things for about 1hour before tring this thing.
Worked for me!!! Good luck!!!
Oct 25, 2009 at 4:43 AM Works Great...........Thanks
Oct 27, 2009 at 1:51 AM Thank you hero
Oct 30, 2009 at 12:26 PM I had the exact same problem on my HTC Hero. Hold the power button until you get that menu that pops up. The bottom one should say 'mobile network' click on it to turn the internet on (If it already isn't on) If you have a google account (Gmail account) use .....@googlemail.com Not ....@gmail.com.
Worked perfectly for me!
Hope it helps

Nov 15, 2009 at 3:50 AM Thankyou so much, My network provider " 3 " advised that this sounded like a technical fault & i would have to pay to send the phone away (2 months old ) to have reset.

Nov 19, 2009 at 12:31 PM I have the same problem on my HTC hero, but i dont want to wipe everything off there completely... if i clicked re-boot would it let me get into my phone with everything there as normal.. Apps, messages and things like that??
Nov 22, 2009 at 6:28 PM thanks for the input crisis over !!!
Nov 23, 2009 at 6:42 AM for those reluctant to reset remember that most data is either with google (if you use gmail) or on your SD card. Any apps you have paid for are remembered and you can download again. you may loose text messages and call history.

Dec 9, 2009 at 7:14 PM Epic fail. This is the most retarded bit of user interface I've ever seen. I've now got to reset everything to get it the way I like it. Which will take hours. No I'm starting to understand why it was worth paying extra for an iPhone. what a chump I am.

A quick Google search and a read of this and my fone is fixed! Its a shame all of my data is lost though!

Dec 20, 2009 at 5:11 PM Hi I've locked myself out of my HTC . Too many patern attempts. I'am on a screen which says to unlock sign in with your google account. I know my google account details but I have set my key board as "phone keyboard" and it does not allow me to click the character I want eg: I want the letter C I normally press the number 2 three times and get to letter C but it's not letting me do that. Any advice. Thanks

Jan 22, 2010 at 5:11 AM I need to access my phone without resetting it - can't afford to lose all my apps and there's also unread texts on there. Other than apps, contacts and sms messages, what else will i lose if i reset it?
Why is it that some people's username and password work and others don't?? When i enter mine it rejects it INSTANTLY - you can tell it hasn't actually connected to the net to check it. I thought it was a connectivity problem at first but i've tried in various locations and still no success. I've even tried changing my password on my gmail account too. Nothing works!
It's a disgrace that google or android haven't officially acknowledged this problem and come up with a solution!
Jan 23, 2010 at 9:48 AM i try all but still unable to unlock my phone yet..who can save me?!
Jan 27, 2010 at 5:53 AM Thank you very much. Phone to work. Thanks

Feb 3, 2010 at 12:38 PM omggg. thank you soooo much.
Feb 7, 2010 at 8:13 AM Here's the solution to unlock without losing your data:
Type you gmail username and in the password field type "null". You will then be prompted to enter a new pattern and your phone will be unlocked.
I just did this on my HTC, worked perfectly.
