HTC Magic locked out by too many pattern attempts, how to factory reset

HTC MAGIC , smart phones Add comments

While we were on holiday my son accidentally locked my HTC Magic phone (aka G2) by getting the unlocking pattern on the touch screen wrong too many times.

It then asks for your google account credentials. No problem I thought, but it would not accept them. I thought maybe it just because I was roaming and did not have full data facilities, however even once home it simply would not accept my google account details even though I could now double check them on another machine.

Took me a while to find the factory reset option so thought I would blog it here.

  1. Turn phone off
  2. Hold home key and press power on key - after a short wait (quicker than normal startup) you will see a screen with a Warning triangle and a phone picture
  3. Press Home key and Power on key together- you will see three options
    • reboot
    • apply sdcard:update.zip
    • factory reset
  4. Select with track ball and click as required

Hope that helps someone.

Unlocked mine without doing all that!!!!

1-If your android is off...don't bother to enter email and password...
How to open android...call yourself, your phone can still receive calls...as soon as phone rings, you have a quater of a second to press on your android button on the menu(if you see it or have put it there like mine was).

2- if that dosen't work, call yourself, answer and get to the menu by pressing on the home button right after pressing on the menu button(wich will open a settings window for your call) two things might happen(tried it a couple of times and got 2 results by error)

-1- you can acces your menu and:activate internet or try to play with the security settings

-2- you wil be promped to the pattern screen and have unlimited pattern access(after 5 unsuccesive attempts you'll need to wait 30sec.).

Hope this will work for you. I unlocked mine by opening APNdroid(to access internet/activate 3G) and after that, promped my complete gmail adress(*****@gmail.com) and my password (i made sure on my pc that i can open my gmail account with what i am entering as username and password). My phone asked me to create a new pattern, did that and after confirming it,my phone was unlocked. I've been tring lots of things for about 1hour before tring this thing.

    Worked for me!!! Good luck!!!

I had the exact same problem on my HTC Hero. Hold the power button until you get that menu that pops up. The bottom one should say 'mobile network' click on it to turn the internet on (If it already isn't on) If you have a google account (Gmail account) use .....@googlemail.com Not ....@gmail.com.

    Worked perfectly for me!

    Hope it helps

for those reluctant to reset remember that most data is either with google (if you use gmail) or on your SD card. Any apps you have paid for are remembered and you can download again. you may loose text messages and call history.

Hi I've locked myself out of my HTC . Too many patern attempts. I'am on a screen which says to unlock sign in with your google account. I know my google account details but I have set my key board as "phone keyboard" and it does not allow me to click the character I want eg: I want the letter C I normally press the number 2 three times and get to letter C but it's not letting me do that. Any advice. Thanks

I need to access my phone without resetting it - can't afford to lose all my apps and there's also unread texts on there. Other than apps, contacts and sms messages, what else will i lose if i reset it?

Why is it that some people's username and password work and others don't?? When i enter mine it rejects it INSTANTLY - you can tell it hasn't actually connected to the net to check it. I thought it was a connectivity problem at first but i've tried in various locations and still no success. I've even tried changing my password on my gmail account too. Nothing works!

It's a disgrace that google or android haven't officially acknowledged this problem and come up with a solution!

  71. Rod Says:
As many have mentioned this situation really sucks. Im a pretty happy Android user but they've got a lot to learn when it comes to OS stability. Any how Ive tried it all and none of it worked. So finally I just factory re-set. The only positive part is if you keep all you contact on Gmail then you'll still have them. An very important point to mention is when you input your gmail address is use the googlemail.com format otherwise the phone doesn't sync properly with Android market nor will the claneder but funnily enough the contacts do. Ahh Android get your sh@t together. Also if you have previously purchased software like documents togo, if you have the registration its free to re-install!

for all of you who have forgotten your gmail account and password this is simpliest way to do it without loosing everything on a HTC Hero
ok i did this and it took me about 2 hourse to figure it out and went duh after i did it.
    what you need:
another phone, a email address that you can access
send your self a text messagen then call yourself, after you answer your phone scroll down the missed text message from the top of the screen, tap on it hit then hit menu then composetype in a person you know in the to box, click on his/her name and a box appears under the to collum click on it and click on view personslide over to email, click on it where it says add email address, add your email address that you can access then click on then scroll back over to the information tab and click on send e-mail then compose, then compose again then send.
This sends it to the address that you used from your gmail account.
you then have to sign in to your e-mail account on the internet click on the message sent there.
you will see the gmail name copy it down that is your account name.
if you forgot your password go to google click in long on and follow the directions for recovering or changing your password.
    you can thank me later

And after around an hour on worries, I finally found a solution to unlock after your phone rejects your password.

Just write your email address, and type "null" in Password field, without quotes ("")
    And phone will unlock...
Works on my HTC G2 Touch...

And no doubt, it's such a Bug, and this solution is a proof that how vulnerable this locking system is...
  100. Kenny B Says:
Konie Dost, you are a star the above worked on my Hero 1st time, no need to factory reset or lose data, many many thanks, everyone try above first befor anything else.

I have the HTC Hero and my phone locked too and would not let me use my username and password. I went on google and reset my password. I had the triangle symbol at the top of my phone. I had my wife call me. Then I pulled the options down from the top. I tapped it and had it try to re-authenticat my username and password. Right when it started I had my wife hang up and it continued to do the job. Then i was able to type in username and password NOOOO problem...worked great!

  104. stella Says:
Right folks if all that don't work, press the power key , home key and the back key together ~( like control, alt deleate works on a pc ) takes you to a white screen with system info and a red message saying
    Menu - device restart
press the menu key and let your phone reboot , it will now be cleared of all data and reset to factory settings . it's a shame to have to do it but it saves sending it away for up to 3 weeks !!!

    hope it helps :-)

For all those that need the help and have no last resort, please look at this!

I was at the stage where factory reset was not an option, the 'null' thing wouldn't work and neither would any other trick. It is so simple! Instead of doing 'gmail' in your address, do 'googlemail' so for example '*******@googlemail.com' and then for the password type 'null'. Thanks,

    Finn
