Mark introduced himself and explained how the development of the cfeclipse plugin has progressed over the years and some of the people in the cf community that have contributed. Mark has now become the lead developer by virtue of doing most work recently on the project.
For those unfamiliar with eclipse and the cfeclipse plugin Mark started with some background. He stressed the importance of understanding the difference between what the base eclipse IDE platform supplies and what additional plugins (like cfeclipse) provide. (Partly so that you moan to the right development team on the right mailing list if things break or you want new features :)
Mark demonstrated the ease of installing eclipse (the base IDE) and then how to add any plugin can be done either by downloading the plugin (a jar file or full folder) and dropping this into the eclipse plugin folder, or by entering an update URL within eclipse which will then download the plugin for you to the correct location.
Mark demonstrated some new and some existing features of eclipse and cfeclipse, I will just cover the new features here because there existing key features are covered admirably by Nathan Strutz
New Features (availble in next release)
- Component Explorer
- More Dictionaries
- Dictionary View
- Jump-to or create cfincluded files
- Toolbar Homesite+/CFStudio style
- Drag'n'drop support for files
- RDS plugin from adobe
From a personal point of view some of these features are things I did not use in HS+ so have not missed, however there are many in the community who DO use these features and have not switched to cfeclipse because they did not want to give up these facilities. So well done to Mark for getting these features implemented.
I was most excited by the Component Explorer. This is a new view that shows all the components in you current project in a tree matching the folder structure of your project. It lets you quickly find and organise your components and also lets you generate instantiate code or code invoke methods in either CFSCRIPT style or TAG style. Very cool. The path to your components is controlled by a new 'component root' project level parameter.
More Dictionaries. The xml dictionaries (under the cfe plugin folder) contain the language insight information, in other words they describe the structure of each tag or function that the cfe editor recognises. There will now be the option to add an unlimited number of custom dictionaries rather just the user.xml. These are controlled by the new dictionaryconfig.xml. So you might set up a framework specific dictionary (Mark is already working on one for Fusebox4.1 and maybe 5 :-).
Dictionary View Using the xml dictionary files and some new layout xml files, there is now a new Dictionary view which echoes the same view from HS+/CFStudio. This allows a tag or function to be inserted via a popup dialogue which prompts you for attributes and supplies any help. If you're a mouse oriented drag'n'drop type person you'll appreciate this.
Jump-to or create cfincluded files This lets you click on the filename in the template attribute of CFINCLUDE and open that file in the editor or create a new blank file if it does not yet exist.
Toolbar Homesite+/CFStudio style This duplicates the toolbar from HS+/CFStudio with different groups of commonly used tags. It appears at the top of the editor window rather than with the standard eclipse toolbars. A cool feature of the tool bar is that you can add your own buttons and link these to snippets. Snippets are more powerful in CFE, allowing you to prompt for variables with preset options if required and include various system constants, so this opens a powerful way to customise the way you want to drop your own commonly used code into files.
Drag'n'drop support for files Another cool feature is the ability to drag'n'drop files into a template you are editing and have CFE create the appropriate reference to the file. So drag an image and you get an [IMG] tag (impressively with the correct width and height!), drag a .js JavaScript file and you get a [script] tag pointing to the file, drag a .css style sheet and you get a [link] tag. Nice stuff and as Mark pointed out it is cleverer than DW which gets some of these file/tag associations wrong!
RDS plugin from adobe Last but not least Mark demonstrated another separate (but related) plugin that Adobe have developed. This gives you the RDS functionality of access to remote CFServers. This works in exactly the same way as it does in HS+/CFStudio. The advantage of being able to access databases without setting up the data sources separately in a DB plugin could be useful. For those who need to access code on a remote server, the lack of this function in CFE previously may have been a major reason for not switching, so this will be very welcome. This plugin is under Adobe control and while it seems to be a stable alpha release, Mark did not have a firm date for its release.
All in all a wealth of new features that makes an excellent plugin for eclipse (CFECLIPSE) even better and should convince the majority of HS+/CFStudio 'die hards' that its time to switch.
Finally Mark pointed out that since this is an open source project any of us in the CF community, can contribute. Thanks Mark for taking to time to demo these new features and for the CFEclipse teams work to bring us the next release!
